The Chinese roulette player and the one time large bet.

Touring the gambling joints and casinos is a significant and very enjoyable part of the life of most pro roulette players. I used to go on roulette playing tours around Europe and often even further away. I might tour until I considered that I found a truly unique place, where I might stay for an extended time of playing roulette and enjoying life. I was in one of these 'extraordinary places' a couple of years back and had been staying and playing there for approximately 3 months, long enough time to get an idea of who is who and who does what.

That particular casino had numerous Chinese roulette players - like most casinos. Chinese gamblers, as most of us know, have genuine determination and nerve when they gamble. It was one such gambler who let me witness one of the most magical roulette moments that I can recall. He was quite a funny, but then again unassuming small man who would almost dependably play with $5 and $10 chips, most likely entering the casino with like $600 and the hope to win roughly $4000 on his best luck days. One night he was cheerfully playing without end and winning a quite a bit. I was by him at the roulette wheel when he waved to the supervisor to approach him. In fact, this wasn't simply the supervisor this was the casino director himself: an enchanting man who was said to have enjoyed a bit of gambling in the past - on the stallions.

As meddling as I might have felt, I still couldn't hear what they were talking over. However after something like a moment or two the manager went to the dealer and advised him to go and raise the house limit for this spin only. The roulette wheel was spun and and in a moment our chirpy Chinese man immediately places a full stack of $100 chips on number 11! The manager promptly and proudly announces: 'House limit raised! We accept $2000 on number 11". I am, as you can envision, totally startled. This was an one off bet and the casino was raising the bet limit tenfold.  By this time its perfectly clear what they had been talking over and all the focus was on the roulette wheel, with administration and gamblers surging in from all points.

Blast! Straight in number 11! Nobody could believe their own eyes.

I have never seen the limit raised before, in any casino in my long gambling life. And more than that, surely not by ten times. What's more astonishing though, is that on this one extraordinary event, the ball went straight to the exact number played.

This was a $70,000 win in 60 seconds and by the look on the characteristics of the Inspectors & Pit Bosses it was nothing less than than a total horror. They were all looking towards the director with annoyance, probably feeling that this one spin had had just cost each of them about three months worth of profit bonuses. The win itself was not the biggest ever, however in respect to the sum the player generally wagered and the relatively small turnover of this specific casino, it was a unbearable, titanic hit.

It may be simple in insight into the past to say that it was an awful choice. Though under any circumstances, even if the Chinese had lost, it was still a terrible call. It might maybe be more sensible to acknowledge such a raise if the bet was not an one off. The thought of a player making numerous bets of this size might be significantly more appealing to the casino.
